The Netherlands moved closer to qualification for the last 16 with a 1-0 victory over a defensively stubborn Japan.

Netherlands played like a team full of confidence as they kept possession well and did not panic even as Japan held out to the half-time whistle.

Wesley Sneijder's powerful 52nd-minute winner from just outside the box proved to be the difference between two teams whose styles provided a fascinating contrast.

The Dutch goal opened up the game as Japan were forced to do more than just sit back and play for the 0-0 draw, with chances falling to both sides just before the final whistle.

But the Netherlands held firm to win - and go top of Group E with six points.
