Luis Suarez scored twice including a spectacular winner to hand Uruguay a place in the World Cup quarters-finals at the expense of South Korea.
It will be the first time since 1970 the two-time winners have reached the last eight, and it was done on the back of a determined performance against a lively South Korea side.
Uruguay took the lead as early as the eighth minute when Diego Forlan played a low ball across the six-yard area which was misjudged by keeper Jung Sung-Ryong and Suarez nipped in at the far post to drill the ball into the net.
South Koreans then presssed for an equaliser without really creating too much until Lee Chung-Yong pounced on Maurico Victorino's attempted headed clearance from a free-kick, to nod in from eight yards on 68 minutes.
With 10 minutes remaining, Suarez pciked up a half cleared corner, cut in from the left and curled a stunning strike which went in far the far post.
The South Koreans pressed and might have taken the game into extra-time, but although substitute Lee Dong-Gook's shot squirmed under the wet jersey of Muslera, it was cleared before crossing the line.
Uruguay will now play the winners of the match between Ghana and the United States in the last eight.
