Falcao scored in the 7th minute with a superb effort before a smart turn and shot doubled the lead before halftime.
Bilbao pressed forward after the break with Markel Susaeta twice going close, but Atletico Madrid looked just as dangerous on the counter attack and Diego darted through a ragged Bilbao defence to seal victory just before the end.
