Corinthians beat Chelsea 1-0 to lift Club World Cup

BRAZILIAN club Corinthians have won the Club World Cup in Japan, overcoming European champions Chelsea 1-0 in an untidy match.

The match at the 68,000-capacity International Stadium in Yokohama was frenetic, with several chances at both ends, but much of the action was down to individual skills and defensive mistakes rather than flowing team play.

Striker Guerrero got the only goal of the game for Corinthians in the 69th minute heading in from close range - and the Sao Paulo club secured its second intercontinental title - it won the FIFA Club World Championship in 2000.

Chelsea's Fernando Torres missed the best chance to equalise when he shot straight at the goalkeeper from the edge of the six-yard box with only four minutes to go. Torres had the ball in the net in injury time, but it was ruled offside and Corinthians held on.

CONCACAF champion Monterrey of Mexico took third place by defeating Egypt's Al Ahly 2-0 through goals from Jesus Corona and Cesar Delgado.
